Bearing   one's   suffering     with   fortitude   and   not   causing suffering   to   others,   is   the   essence   of   penance   (261).

True   penance   comes   from   the   attitude   of   penitence,   not to   those   without   that   attitude   (262).

While   providing   food   and   sustenance   to   the   ascetics,   householders
seem   to   have   forgotten   their   own   need   to   do   penance   ?   (263).

The   power   to   destroy   foes   and   elevate   friends   comes   readily
to   those   who   practise   penance   (264).

Achievement   of   a   future   objective   requires   the   practice of   penance,   in   this   lifetime   (265).

Íéòãóª    çìªÌ       being ensnared by desire
 
Those   who   engage   in   penance,   in   fact,   engage   in   the   performance   of their   duty. Others   engage   in   futile   activities   ensnared   by   desire   (266).

àìòÐàì                  in the purificatory crucible of (suffering)
îåè÷ªæ¨÷ªçôõÐæÐÆ     those engaged in penance
 
Just   as   fire   purifies   gold   and   makes   it   shine,  so   too  , does penance   purify   and   bring   enlightenment   (267).

êè䪠                               the arrogance of "I'
í÷çªâç÷ª÷èéä             has got rid of
Öéäá                            all
ë䪠  ãá¨õР   öùªùè몠      all living beings
âêèÇ몠                          will worship
 
He   who   controls   himself   (by   ridding   his   arrogance   by   penance),
will   be   worshipped   by   all   others   (268).

Ô÷ª÷몠                        from the god of death

Í÷ª÷ùª                        mastery
êéùçªçìªìôõÐæÐÆ       who have achieved
   
He   who   has   mastered   penance   will   conquer   even   death   (269).

The   wealthy   are   few   and   the   poor   are   many,   because only   a   few   practise   penance   and   many   do   not   (270).
