òèäª÷èúªéë îë÷ªâæèóª çôõÐæÐÆ

æìäª öäªç   is second nature
åùªùéô   good attributes
öùªùè몠  all
æìäª í÷¨åÐÊ   aware of their duties
òèäª×   endowed with fine attributes
Íúªéë   and following it
îë÷ªâæèóªçôõÐæÐÆ   people of that way of life

Being good is second nature to those who are aware of their duties and who pursue perfection (981).

Æúåù몠  the greatness arising from good nature
òèäªî÷èõР  of the great
åùäª   is good nature

ç¨÷åù몠  all other good qualities
öåÐåùêÐÊ   of any quality
ãóªó­ã몠  even if there
íäª×   is not

The greatness of a person lies in his good qualities.
All else is of no consequence (982).

åèúª   fear of doing wrong
ø窵õ²   consideration for others
æúªîúèìªì몠  compassion
ôèáªéëîáèÌ   along with truth
ÉåÐÊ   five
òèùªµ   good qualities
Ãäª÷¨á   support
­úª  pillars

Love, being sociable,sensitivity, consideration and truth are the five pillars that support a noble character (983).

âæèùªùè åùêÐêÊ îåèäªéë ç¨÷õÐê©éë   984
âòèùªùè åùêÐêÊ òèùªµ

âæèùªùè  åùêÐêÊ  non-killing
îåèäªéë   penance is
ç¨÷õÐ   others
ê©éë   deriding
âòèùªùè  åùêÐêÊ  not engaging in
òèùªµ   is a mark of culture

Non-killing is the best form of penance, and not deriding others is a mark of culture (984).

ëè÷ª÷èéõ ëè÷ª×ëª çéì

Í÷ª×ôèõР  of the one who accomplishes a task
Í÷ª÷ùª   capacity
çú¨êùª   showing humility
íÊ  that
òèäªî÷èõР  of the virtuous
ëè÷ª÷èéõ   the enemy
ëè÷ª×몠  overcome
çéì  weapon

Humility is the mark of the successful, and for the virtuous it helps overcome enemies (985).

ÊéùáùªùèõÐ æúªÑ§ª âæèóùª

òèùªç¨÷ªÆ   to one endowed with noble qualities
æìªìéó   the touchstone
áèÊ öä¨ùª   is what
îêèùªô¨   defeat
Êéù íùªùèõР  even inferiors
æúªÑ몠  with
âæèóùª   to accept

Graceful acceptance of defeat at the hands of others,
even inferiors, is the mark of nobility (986).

¬äªäè   harm
âò᪠êèõÐæÐÆ몠  even to one who has caused
¬ä¨áîô   good turn only
âòáªáèæÐæèùª   if one does not do

òèùªµ   nobility

What is the value of nobility if one cannot do good
even to one who has caused harm ? (987)

¬äªéë øÕô÷ª æ¨ó¨ôäª× òèùªâçäªÄåР 988
ê¨úªéë±úª ìèæçª âç÷¨äª

 ¬äªéë   poverty
øÕô÷ªÆ   to one
¬ó¨²  demerit
íäª×   is not
òèùªµ   endowed with good attributes
öäªÄ몠  known as
ê¨úªéë   strength
ãúªìèæ窠 âç÷¨äª  if one possesses

The man of noble character will see no demerit in being poor (988).

ÃȨ âçáõ¨ÄåÐ êèëªâçáõèõÐ òèäª÷èúªéëæÐÆ   989
ÍȨ âáäçªçÌ ôèõÐ

ÃȨ âçáõ¨Ä몠  even if times change
êèëª âçáõèõР  they will not swerve
òèäª÷èúªéëæÐÆ   of good qualities
ÍȨ  (possessing an) ocean (of good qualities)
öäçªçÌôèõР  reputed for

The one who is an ocean of nobility will not swerve even in the midst of calamitous change (989).

òèäª÷ôõÐ òèäª÷èúªéë Æäª÷¨äª ¬Õå¨ùåÐêè䪠  990
ê觪æèÊ ëäªîäè âçèé÷

òèäª÷ôõÐ  the noble
òèäª÷èúªéë   his nature of being righteous
Æäª÷¨äª   if falls
¬Õå¨ùåÐêè䪠  this big world
ê觪æèÊ   unable to bear
ëäª  will suffer
Ø  O!
âçèé÷   its burden

If a noble person falls from his standards of rectitude, even the earth will not be able bear and will suffer (990)
