VERSES 1001 TO 1010

åäª÷¨á¨ùª âòùªôëª     Wasted Wealth
 

éôêÐêèäªôèáòèäª÷âçÕëªâçèÕóªíþÊúªúèäª 1001
âòêÐêèäª âòáæÐæ¨ìåÐê ê¨ùª

éôêÐêè䪠  whoever accumulates walth
ôè᪠òèäª÷   in one's possession
âçÕëªâçèÕóª   great wealth
íþÊ   that
ãúªúè䪠  does not utilise it
âòêÐêè䪠  is as good as dead
âòáæÐæ¨ìåÐêÊ   he achieves
¬ùª  not

He who accumulates wealth and does not utilise it for
productivity, is as good as dead (1001).

ëÕóèäèëª ëèúèçª ç¨÷窵

âçèÕóè䪠  with wealth alone
Íëª   can be
öùªùè몠  everything (obtain)
öäª×   thus (thinking)
¼áèÊ   not giving to anybody
¬ô×ëª   being miserly
ëÕóè䪠  owing to his idiocy
Íëª   will result in
ëèúè   wretched
ç¨÷窵   birth

The miser who accumulates wealth thinking that is the be-all and end-all of life and does not share it with
others will only earn a wretched future birth (1002).

¼ìªìëª ¬ô÷¨ ¬éòîôúªìè ÍìôõÐ 1003
îêè÷ª÷ëª å¨ùæÐÆçª âçèé÷

¼ìªì몠  amassing wealth
¬ô÷¨   (alone) desirous of
¬éò îôúªìè   not desiring fame
ÍìôõР  such people
îêè÷ª÷몠  their birth
å¨ùæÐÆ窠 âçèé÷  is a burden on this earth

Those intent only on amassing wealth without using it for (good work) establishing their fame, are a burden on this earth (1003).

öòÐò몠  leaving behind (wealth)

öúªÑ몠 âæèùª  will a miser count upon

åòÐò窠 çìèí êôäª   not liked

What wealth will the miser count when he dies leaving
behind no well-wisher ? (1004)

âæèÌçªç­ãåÐ Êáªçªç­ãëª ¬ùªùèõÐæÐ æÌæÐæ¨á 1005
îæèï±úª ìèá¨Ä ë¨ùª

âæèÌçªç­ã몠  giving to others
Êáªçªç­ã몠  one enjoying one's wealth
¬ùªùèõÐæÐÆ   not doing these
íÌæÐæ¨á  îæèï  crores of resources
ãúªÌ Íá¨Ä몠  even if available
¬ùª  it is of no use

The crores that one amasses but gives to none and not
enjoys himself, does it no gain whatever (1005).

Öêëª âçÕ¢ªâòùªôåÐ êèäª×ôªôèäª êæÐæèõÐæÐâæèäª 1006
÷©êùª ¬áùªç¨ùè êèäª

Öêëª   is a disease
âçÕ¢ªâòùªô몠  extensive wealth
êèäª Êôªôè䪠  will not enjoy himself
êæÐæèõÐæÐÆ   to the deserving
øäª×   what they want
¼êùª   giving
¬áùªµ   nature
¬ùèêè䪠  one who does not have

Saving wealth without enjoying it or giving to those in need,is no better than a disease (1006).

âç÷ª÷èóª êë¨áóªßêÐ ê÷ª×

í÷ª÷èõÐæÐÆ   to the needy
øäª×   providing their needs
Í÷ª÷èêè䪠  one who does not
âòùªô몠  (his) wealth
ë¨æåù몠  extremely beautiful features
âç÷ª÷èóª   the woman possessing it
êë¨áóª   remaining single
ßêÐÊ   till she grows old
í÷ª×   is like

The man of wealth who is not generous is like the beautiful woman remaining single and lonely ripening into old age (1007).

åòÐà ëõëªçÇêÐ ê÷ª×

   åòÐòçªçìèêô䪠  (the miser) who is not liked
âòùªô몠  his wealth
åÌ ÃÕóª   in the centre of the village
åòÐà   poisonous fruit
ëõëª   tree that bears
çÇêÐÊ   ripe (with fruit)
í÷ª×   is like
 


The miser who is not generous is like the tree in the centre of the village that bears poisonous fruit (1008).

êäª âò÷ª×   also depriving oneself
í÷äªîåèæÐæèÊ   not thinking of righteous ways
¼ìªïá   amassed
øúªâçèÕóª   great wealth
âæèóªôèõР  will be enjoyed by
ç¨÷õÐ   others (strangers)

The wealth of a miser who does not share it with his
kith and the deserving, will ultimately pass into the
the hands of strangers (1009).

ô÷§ªÔõÐåÐ êéäáÊ ãéìêÐÊ

ò©õÐ ãéì   the famous
âòùªôõР  wealthy person
ò¨×Ê䨠  a little poor (in charity)
ëèõ¨   clouds
ô÷ëª   without water
ÔõÐåÐÊ   to a great extent
íéäáÊ   state
ãéìêÐÊ   is like

The wealthy man not giving wealth to the needy is
like the cloud that does not release its water
content as rain (1010).
