æóªÓúªúèéë      Abstinence from Drink
 

ãìªæçª çìèíõÐ øó¨á¨ÈçªçõÐ ö¢ª¢èäª×몠 921
æìªæèêùª âæèúªâìèÇÆ ôèõÐ

ãìªæ窠 çìèíõÐ   will not be feared by enemies
øó¨   repute
¬ÈçªçõР  will lose
ö¢ª¢èäª×몠  always
æóªæèêùª  âæèúªÌ   addicted to drink
øÇÆ ôèõР  living

Those who are addicted to drink will not be feared by
their enemies and will soon lose their repute (921).

ãúªú÷ªæ æóªéó ãú¨ùªãúªæ òèäªî÷èõèùª  922
öúªúçª çìîôúªìè êèõÐ

ãúªú÷ªæ   should not consume
æóªéó   drink
ãú¨ùª   if one wants to consume
ãúªæ   may consume
òèäªî÷èõèùª   by the wise
öúªú窠 çì  be held in high esteem
îôúªìè  êèõÐ  not desiring to

None will take to drink except those who do not value
the esteem of high people (922).

òèäªî÷èõÐ ËæêÐÊæÐ æó¨

¼äª÷èóª   one's mother
ËæêÐîê±ëª   in the presence of
¬äªäèÊ   suffering
Íùª   will give
öäª   what
ë÷ª×   would he care
òèäªî÷èõР  respected elders
ËæêÐÊ   in front of
æó¨   make merry

If a person drinks in his mother's presence, what would he care to merrily drink before respected elders ? (923)

îçúèçª âçÕ§ªÆ÷ª÷êÐ êèõÐæÐÆ

åèúªöäªÄ몠  known as modesty
åùªùèóª   the good dame
µ÷ëª âæèÌæÐÆ몠  turn her back
æóª öäªÄ몠  known as drink
îçúè   contemptuous
âçÕ몠  great
Æ÷ª÷êР êèõÐæÐÆ   committing the sin of

The goddess of modesty will turn her back on one
given to drink (924).

éæá÷¨ áèéë ±éìêÐîê âçèÕóª âæèÌêÐÊ   925
âëáªá÷¨ áèéë âæèóùª

éæí÷¨  áèéë         the deluded state which does not know
ãéìêÐÊ                    being in

âçèÕóª  âæèÌêÐÊ   spending money
âëáªí÷¨  áèéë     forgetting one's body
âæèóùª                    consuming (liquor)

It is foolish to pay money to enter a drunken state (925).

Ê¢ªò¨äèõÐ âòêÐêèõ¨äª îô÷ùªùõÐ ö¢ª¢èäª×몠  926
墪àúªçèõÐ æóªÓúª çôõÐ

Ê¢ªò¨äèõР  one who is asleep
âòêÐêèõ¨äª   from the one who is dead
îô× íùªùõР  does not (appear) different
ö¢ª¢èäª×몠  always
墪à ãúªçèõР  (is like) one who consumes poison
æóª ãúªçôõР  one who is drunk

One cannot apparently see a difference between a dead man and one who is asleep, just like one who is drunk and one who has consumed poison (926).

ãóªâóè÷ª÷¨ ãóªñõÐ åæçªçÌôõÐ ö¢ª¢èäª×몠 927
æóªâóè÷ª÷¨æÐ æúªòè᪠çôõÐ

ãóªø÷ª÷¨   who realise his true nature
ãóªñõР  being in the midst of local people
åæçªçÌôõР  will be the butt of ridicule
ö¢ª¢èäª×몠  always
æóªø÷ª÷¨   consuming liquor secretly
æúªòè᪠ çôõÐ  one who loses his balance

Those who often become drunk in private will soon become a laughing stock in public (927).

æó¨êÐê÷¨îáäª öäªçÊ éæô¨Ìæ â墪òêÐÊ   928
øó¨êÐê­ãëª Í§ªîæ ë¨Æëª

æó¨êÐÊ  í÷¨îáäª   I have not drunk
öäªçÊ   such a statement
éæô¨Ìæ   one should avoid
â墪òêÐÊ   in the mind
øó¨êÐê­ã몠  the concealed sins
ͧªîæ   when one is drunk
ë¨Æëª   will be revealed

One who drinks in secret but denies it in public will
be adding lying as one more vice (928).

æó¨êÐêèéä   one intoxicated with drink
æèõú몠  show reason
æèìªÌêùª   and trying to mend
æ©Èªå©õР  in deep waters
Æó¨êÐêèéä   one who is drowned
ê©   with a lamp
Êõ©¬   search
í÷ª×   is like

To show reason to one addicted to drink is like using a torch to locate one drowned in deep waters (929).

æóªãúè   when not drinking
îçèȪê¨ùª   at that time
æó¨êÐêèéä   one in a drunken state
æèÑëªæèùª   when one sees
ãóªóèäªâæèùª   will he not consider
ãúªì   in the intoxicated state
êäª   one's
îòèõв   own condition

No person given to drink seems to be moved, when he is sober,by seeing the sorry predicament of another in a drunken state (930).
