Æäª÷ ôÕç ô¨ìùª  


¬äª÷¨ íéëáè   essential
ò¨÷çªç¨ä   leading to glory
Íá¨Ä몠  even if it is
Æäª÷   detract from family honour
ôÕç  acts that
ô¨ìùª   not doing

Even if it leads to glory, never do anything that detracts
from family honour (961).

ò©õ¨Äëª ò©õùªù âòáªáèîõ ò©âõèÌ 962
îçõèúªéë îôúªÌ çôõÐ

ò©õ¨Ä몠  evne when seeking fame
ò©õÐ íùªù   low acts (that sully the family honour)
âòáªáèõР  will not engage in
Ö  O!
ò©âõèÌ   with fame
îçõÐ Íúªéë   honour
îôúªÌçôõР  seeking

Those seeking high accomplishment will never engage in low
acts that compromise honour (962).

âçÕæÐæêÐÊ îôúªÌëª çú¨êùª ò¨÷¨á 963
àÕæÐæêÐÊ îôúªÌëª ãáõв

âçÕæÐæêÐÊ   in times of prosperity
îôúªÌ몠  is necessary
çú¨êùª   humility
ò¨÷¨á   in lean times
àÕæÐæêÐÊ   in penury
îôúªÌ몠  is necessary
ãáõв   honour
 
In times of prosperity, one should remain humble; but in times
of poverty, one should maintain high honour (963).

êéùá¨äª ¬È¨åÐê ëá¨õéäáõÐ ëèåÐêõÐ 964
å¨éùá¨äª ¬È¨åÐêæÐ æéì

êéùá¨äª   from the head
¬È¨åÐê   fallen
ëá¨õÐ   hair
íéäáõР  like
ëèåÐêõР  people
å¨éùá¨äª   from their high position
¬È¨åÐêæР æéì  when fallen
 
A fall from a position of honour is like the hair
fallen from one's head (964).

Æäª÷¨äª íéäáèÕëª Æäª×ôõÐ Æäª×ô 965
Æäª÷¨ íéäá âòá¨äª

Æäª÷¨äª   like the mountain
íéäáèÕ몠  people with such reputation
Æäª×ôõР  will fall from grace
Æäª×ô   ignoble acts
Æäª÷¨   the `kunri' seed
íéäá   of the measure of
âòá¨äª   if engage in

An ignoble act even as tiny as the "kunri " seed, will bring
down a reputation as mighty as a mountain (965).

µæȨäª÷èùª µêÐîêóªåèìª Ìáªáèêèùª öäªë÷ª 966
÷¨æȪôèõÐç¨äª âòäª× å¨éù

µæȪ ¬äª×  Íùª  no fame
µêÐîêóªåè쪠 Ì  in the heavens
ãáªáèÊ   will not be obtained
Íùª  O!
öäª ë÷ª×   of what other use
¬æȪôèõÐç¨äª   those who scorn
âòäª×   follow
å¨éù   condition
 


There can be no praise on earth or heaven for him who forgets
his honour and waits on people who scorn him (966).

øìªìèõÐç¨äª âòäªâ÷èÕôäª ôèȪêù¨äª íåÐå¨éùîá 967
âæìªìè âääçªçÌêùª åäª×

øìªìèõÐç¨äª   to wait on those who scorn
âòäª×   and to follow them
øÕôäª   a person
ôèȪêù¨äª   rather than living
íåÐå¨éùîá   that condition (earlier penury))
âæìªìè䪠  is dead
öäçªçÌêùª   declared as
åäª×   better

Death is preferable to a life of waiting on those
who scorn you (967).

ëÕåÐîêèë÷ª ×Ãîäèëªµëª ôèȪæÐéæ âçÕåÐêéæéë 968
ç©ìȨá ôåÐê ¬ìêÐÊ

ëÕåÐîêè   is it a potion ?
ë÷ª×   to live
Ãäª Ø몵몠  preserving the body
ôèȪæÐéæ   this life
âçÕåÐêéæéë   of the high-born
ç©Ì  honour
íÈ¨á   of being destroyed
ôåÐê ¬ìêÐÊ   when the situation arises
 


Is this life worth preserving at the cost of
your family honour ? (968)

ëá¨õÐå©çªç¨äª ôèÈèæÐ æôõ¨ëè íäªäèõÐ 969
ãá¨õÐå©çªçõÐ ëèäëª ôõ¨äª

ëá¨õÐå©çªç¨äª   if it loses its hair
ôèÈè   not living
æôõ¨ëè  íäªäèõÐ  like the yak
ãá¨õÐ å©çªçõР  will even give up their lives
ëèäëª ôõ¨äª   if it would help regain their lost honour

Just as the Yak gives up its life when it loses its hair,
so too would great men even give up their lives, if
necessary, to regain their honour (969).

¬ó¨ôõ¨äª ôèÈèê ëèä ËéìáèõÐ 970
øó¨âêèÇ îêêÐÊ ËùÆ

¬ó¨ôõ¨äª   in the face of dishonour
ôèÈèê   embrace death
ëèäëª ãéìáèõР  of those who value honour most
øó¨  fame
âêèÇÊ  ÖêÐÊëª  will salute and respect
ãùÆ  the world

Those who prefer death to dishonour will always be
honoured by the world (970).
