From itself, That one and only
Consciousness, the Atman, willed the creation of Cosmos, beginning with
the first cosmic component of the world of Ambhas, Marichi, Maram and Apah.
Mara represents the earth, Apah the waters below, Marichi the heavens above,
and above Marichi and supported by it, the world of Ambhas. Next, from the
waters, or elements, He raised and fashioned the Purusha to be the guardian
of the three worlds. From the Purusha, came a mouth, from which came speech,
from which came fire. Then from the Purusha emerged the two nostrils, from
which emanated the power of smell, from which came the air. Next from the
Purusha came the eyes, from which came the power of sight, from which emanated
the Sun. From the same Purusha evolved the ears, and the sense of hearing
and the directions of space; the skin, leading to hairs, leading to the herbs
and trees; the heart, leading to the mind and the moon; the navel leading
to the down-breathing process ( life supporting respiratory and digestive
processes), the cessation of which leads to death; the generative organ,
leading to the procreative seed, and that leading to water ( the elements
that give continuity to and sustain that life cycle). Note: Here is an allegoric
description of the evolution of the cosmos, first its being willed into existence,
and then defined progressively in terms of the gods representing its guiding
principles and its material components).
