CONTRACTURES

When a limb is kept in a bent position continuously for a long time, some of the muscles become shorter and it will not be possible to stretch them back to their full length. The inability to move the joints due to shortening of muscles is called contracture.

 How is it caused?

 1. By keeping the limbs bent for a long time
 2. By "muscle imbalance",i.e.
when muscles that bend  or pull a limb in opposite directions are of unequal strength and thus cause contracture. Therefore contractures develop whenever muscles become weak or paralysed, as in the case of polio, cerebral palsy, amputation or other diseases where joints become painful owing to weak or paralysed muscles.

PREVENTION Of Contracture calls for  proper positioning  exercises CLICK HERE FOR DETAILS OF THESE EXERCISES
