Amputation

This is generally the removal of a limb, to save the life of   the patient. Amputation becomes necessary sometimes, in cases  of diabetic wounds(when gangrene sets in), malignant tumors, acute bone infections and also diseases relating to the blood  vessels (caused by excessive smoking)

By providing artificial limbs, and giving training in its  use, the patient could be restored near normal daily movements.

Upper Torso amputee
Lower torso amputee

As in the case of the patients mentioned earlier proper  positioning of the amputated limb is necessary to prevent  CONTRACTURES,because the limb is not used normally and   the patient often keeps it bent. The amputated limbs must  not be kept bent for long.

Exercise is essential for any child with locomotor disability whether caused by congenital deformity , polio, paralysis, cerebral palsy, stroke or amputation. Click on exercises to view in detail.
